How to Calculate Age from Date of Birth
Computing age sounds simple — but getting the exact number of years, months, and days requires careful handling of leap years and varying month lengths.
The Simple Method (Years Only)
For a quick age in years: Current Year − Birth Year, then subtract 1 if your birthday hasn't occurred yet this year.
Born: June 15, 1995 | Today: March 11, 2026 2026 − 1995 = 31 But birthday (June 15) hasn't passed yet → subtract 1 = 30 years old
Exact Age in Years, Months & Days
For the precise calculation:
- Calculate full years elapsed (like above)
- Count remaining months after the last birthday
- Count remaining days after the last full month
This gets complex because months have different lengths (28–31 days) and leap years add an extra day to February. An age calculator handles this automatically.
